Gamecock
Game roosters represent something that was lost in my family’s immigration from Mexico to the United States. My grandfather is a cockfighter by profession. The tradition goes back generations, further than any other known detail about our family. Growing up, my mom was surrounded by game birds. She would sometimes wake up to find them in her room! When we were growing up, my siblings and I would help care for the roosters while we visited. It was so different from our life in the desert Southwest where we hardly had a back yard (let alone animals). As a teenager I began to see cockfights, and while they were not easy to watch it was amazing to see my grandfather and my uncles so serious for once. The blood sport is banned in all of the U.S., so the tradition that has been passed on in our family will not continue with us.
