Fried's Delicatessen
My father never expressed so much pride in his children than when we make a proper deli sandwich. Rye bread - never white. Spicy mustard - never yellow. No added cheese, just overflowing meat slices. He grew up in a small, three bedroom apartment in the Bronx with his Russian-born grandparents, his American-born parents, his uncle, and his sister. The family business was Fried's deli, a restaurant where foods of the old country soaked up the influences of America while influencing American cuisine. The relationship went both ways and for my father it represented an unlikely meeting place of the world of his grandparents, the world of his youth, and the world of his children.
