Framed Photo
The two people in the picture are my Great Grandpa, Richard R. Schilling Sr. And his sister, my Great Great Aunt and namesake, Emilie Schilling. When they were about 4 and 6 years old (Emilie was older) they moved to America from Elberfeld, Germany (1904). As far as I know, my great-grandfather didn’t become an American citizen until after World War I. I received this as a Christmas present from my uncle when I was 7 or 8. He is the history fanatic in our family so he knows all about our family past. Most of my family on my mom’s side came in the seventeenth and eighteenth century., so this is our most recent connection I have to immigration. As I already said, Emilie is also my namesake so it is a way to connect me to a part of my family story that I didn’t really know.
