Family Cookbook
My chosen object is my family's cookbook. My mom was given this cookbook by my grandma, who passed. This cookbook has recipes from many different generations on my mom's side of the family. Whenever someone makes a memorable dish or a traditional family recipe, it is written to keep the recipe in the family and shared with many people to come. There are all different handwriting styles showing the way things were written during that time period. The recipes that my mom and I have added are in non-cursive writing, showing how cursive writing is not as common anymore. But if you look back at the old recipes from my great-grandma and great aunts, you can see how normalized cursive writing was. This cookbook connects to my family's identity because it contains recipes that my family has made for years at special events and holidays or just daily meals. A Lot of these recipes are ones that we make every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving, and so keeping them in this book allows us to stay connected no matter where we are. This cookbook connected my family to being American because it shows the evolution of American life and ingredients throughout generations. Many of these recipes lived through things like depressions and the recipes reflect that with their ingredients. This cookbook is so important to my family because even though my extended family and I may not come together for every holiday, we know we are still together through the food we make.
