this is a plate of injera.

My family artifact is food. This food is called injera and it is an Ethiopian cuisine because I am half ethiopian. Injera is an extremely thin and squishy bread with tiny holes in it in the shape of a huge pizza. You can put multiple different sauces around the injera in a circle leaving bread to rip off and dip in the sauces from the center, and around the bread. I'm talking about injera because it has layers and holes, just like my family. You can find injera being distributed by older aunties and uncles who you might not even be related to at every family event and better believe you will be getting it force-fed to you. Foods like these that you are born eating and know the texture by heart will naturally one comfort because I know it does just that for me. I feel more connected to my culture when I'm enjoying this food with my family as I often feel like I'm not the most cultured or associated with my culture as I should be which makes me feel guilty. I hope that someday when I'm older I can learn and master how to make injera so my kids can have it. This is because I want them to know where they came from and not to be ashamed of it or not talk about it because sometimes I do that. It's important to me for them to know this because I truly feel my best when I'm surrounded by my own culture and don't have to hide!
