Embroidered Pillowcase
My great-grandmother, Marguerite, married and had kids at a very young age. She had to work in order to provide for her family after moving from rural Louisiana, where she had planted her Creole roots, to the big city, or the Big Easy. As a hobby, she loved embroidering and these pictures of an embroidered pillowcase is an example of her work and her favorite subjects, birds. Embroidery was her way of also bonding with her grandchildren. My mom remembers sitting with my great-grandmother and listening to stories as my great-grandmother embroidered while my mom's young, nimble fingers would feed the thread through the eye of the needle. Everyone had a pillowcase from my great-grandmother and the one pictured is my mom's is still in use today.
