This is a decorative elephant. I chose this object because it is representative of a lot of the decorative pieces in my house. My family is African-American but we have little cultural connection to any contemporary African culture. My parents, perhaps as a way of reconciling this, decorate the house with my pieces that invoke African art. This consists of wooden sculptures, masks, and animals. These kinds of items are featured prominently in our family and living rooms. In a way, these objects are my parents' way of connecting to our ancestral roots, long since obscured.
