Danish Butter Cookies

Danish Butter Cookies, to most these may just be your average cookies that you get whenever you get a craving for something savory and sweet, but to me they represent much more. Whenever I see these cookies I am bombarded with wonderful memories. Everytime my eyes fall upon those cookies I instantly see my Grandpa, may he rest in peace, on his rocking chair with a smile on his face. This memory is the most vibrant because I also see my whole family in the reflection of his eyes. It’s Christmas time and everyone is together, all the cousins, aunts, and uncles. Everyone is here and everyone is laughing and interacting with each other, and in the distance I see my Grandmother walking around with a plate full of Danish Butter Cookies. It’s a memory full of love and happiness, and it originates from these cookies.
My family means the world to me, especially my cousins. We were all raised together; my mother took care of almost every single niece and nephew she had, and to this day a lot of my cousins call her Mami since she is essentially everyone's mom. We are very close and the bond we have is near unbreakable. Even after I came to America with my Mom and Dad, the Danish Butter Cookies remained in our Christmas tradition, and every now and then all of us -- my dad, mom, brother, and my sister-in-law -- sit around the dining table talking about the times we lived in the Dominican Republic and sharing stories while we eat these cookies. They may just be sweets, but these Danish Butter Cookies have a lot of history in my family and in my culture.
