Coqui The Puerto Rican Frog

I have a small Coqui toy on my living room shelf with the television. It is a figurine of a small, light green frog, and is a cultural symbol of my Puerto Rican heritage. An native animal to Puerto Rico, it is known for its distinct chirping ribbits, often filling the night with its sounds. The sound is nostalgic and reminds me of home. Each sound reminds me of nature and tradition. The figurine is made of ceramic and painted carefully in green and brown. It takes me back to listening to the coquí lullaby when I was a child.

This toy is more than just art or decoration. It is important to my family because of the memories we shared with it. I think of the nights when we shared food and told stories while hearing Coquí ‘shearing the Coquí's talk. Its image tells a story of strength and hopes for my people. It reflects our love for the land, our values, and our joy for life. Throughout history, the Coquí has stayed an important part of Puerto Rican culture. It quietly reminds us of nature’s presence.
