Childhood Blanket

Relationship: Child of im/migrant

It started when I was born. My father's family was really excited because my dad was the first boy to have a child. The moment I was born, my dad wrapped me in a blanket my aunt and grandmother made me. When I was brought home, the handmade pillowcase and blanket were put in my crib. I couldn’t sleep without that blanket. My dad left my mom like 2 months after I was born. As I grew older, the less fit my mom was to take care of me.  She had problems of her own she had to take care of that weren’t me as her child. Soon enough, my mother’s problems started affecting my life and my elementary school staff noticed. Child services were contacted and I was taken into custody. I was in the system for 3 months and the blanket went with me. I went through the toughest time of my life with that blanket and to this day I can’t sleep without it. It is very significant to me because it was how I felt safe when I was alone. It was my shield.
