Ceviche

Relationship: Im/migrant

My object is ceviche. Ceviche is made from shrimp, onions, cilantro, cucumber and tomato. It is a traditional food in Ecuador which is where the person I interviewed, Monica, was born. Monica came to New York at the age of 18 because she planned to start a family and she believed that there would be more opportunities for her and her family here in the United States. When she came to New York she did not know how to speak English. Because she did not know English, she had a hard time adjusting to her new home. Monica always made ceviche when she felt homesick because it helped remind her of Ecuador. After, a while she became accustomed to the way the things are here in New York, and she managed to learn enough English to communicate. Before I was born Monica was a housekeeper. She cleaned my parents house once a week. As babies my sister and I loved her so much that she became our full time nanny from the time I was two years old.  She has taught me so many things including how to make ceviche and how to speak Spanish fluently. Monica recently made ceviche for me, but I did not like it. I gave it to my dogs (but I did not tell Monica about that).
