Canal Bank Twenty Dollars
While going through some of my family’s personal papers, I discovered my great-grandfather had some holdings at the New Orleans Canal and Banking Company. My great-grandfather had migrated to New Orleans from northern Louisiana in the early 20th century. This led me to do some research on the New Orleans Canal and Banking Company and to purchase a bank note from an auction. The Canal Bank began as the New Orleans Canal and Banking Company from March 5, 1831. The bank went through several changes in corporate title, due to multiple mergers. The bank went into liquidation on March 1, 1933, following the National Bank Holiday. This financial institution was succeeded on May 22, 1933, by the National Bank of Commerce in New Orleans. Having the unique bank note makes me feel connected to my great-grandfather, New Orleans, and my family’s history here.
