Ahmed Ibrahim is a young student at CUNY Hunter. He is an Egyptian American hailing from Astoria, Queens. He talks about his experiences navigating two identities at the same time. Sometimes he’s “too American” for his Egyptian family at home, and other times he’s “too Egyptian” to be fully embraced in American identity. Ultimately, while others make these distinctions for him, Ahmed sees no conflict between his identities. He talks about how his community in Astoria has been a safe space for him to embrace his culture with his family. He fondly talks about his camera, used by his family since before he was born, that has documented his entire family’s time in America. At the same time, he talks about what his American identity means to him. This is where he’s lived all his life, where his friends are, and where he goes to school. Not limited to one idea or identity, he’s very vocally multicultural, and proudly so.
