Cadine and Katie By: Cathy B. Cadine and Katie aren’t just remnants of my childhood but symbols of my memories, experiences and passions. They signify my first trip outside my home country and were gifts filled with love and intention from my grandmother and mother. Katie, a very expensive purchase, instilled in me the love my mother has for me. She knew how much I adored baby dolls and ensured that on my first trip to America, I would have my very own life-like doll. Cadine, an impossible request made to my grandma, in which I pleaded with her to bring a doll that could cry, eat and do all the things a real baby could from her trip to America. While this wasn’t entirely possible, my grandma delivered the next best thing, a cherished doll from her late friend’s collection. I knew these dolls were special as upon migrating to the U.S., I ensured they made the trip. Cadine and Katie aren’t just dolls, they were my first patients. My desire has always been to become a doctor, but in caring for Cadine and Katie, and other young children around me, I knew I was destined to become a pediatrician. Cadine and Katie are more than toys, they were the beginning of my future.
