Books
For as long as I can remember, my family has had a long history of embracing and encouraging education. This tradition came from the fact that my family originally emigrated in the 1600s from the British isles for greater economic opportunity. They were not able to afford education due to them being poor farmers, so they had to teach themselves. This tradition is not as strong as it used to be in the pre-public school era, but it still survives today as enthusiasm with literacy and writing from a young age.
My dad taught me the basics of reading and writing from about age 3, and, by the time I was in kindergarten, I could read and write simple sentences. I would like to carry on this tradition because being taught from a young age really helped me develop my current reading and writing skills.
My dad, when he was about 20 years old, received a book collection of mostly science fiction books from his father, which he himself received from his father. I was recently given this very same collection. It has almost every level of reading from simple children's books to complex and abstract science fiction books. My father taught me how to read from this very collection, and I plan to do the same. It is a reminder of how far our family has come from poor farmers to where they are today.
