Boarding Ticket
My object is the boarding ticket that my great grandfather used to travel by boat from Lithuania to South Africa in 1933. My father gave me this document that he found with the help of a researcher in 2014, one year after my great grandfather died. This ticket shows the starting location, Lithuania, and the destination, South Africa, as well as a list of the other family members traveling with him and their ages, including his mother, sister, and brother. His father is not listed on the boarding pass because he had already traveled to South Africa five years earlier to establish his business, find housing, and earn enough money to pay for his family’s ticket. The name on the document has the Lithuanian spelling of my family’s name. Without this piece of paper, my great grandfather might have died in the Holocaust or been a victim of Russian pogroms. This document is important to my family because it allowed my great grandfather to begin his life in South Africa which later led him to emigrate to America and continue the growth of his family. This document is special to me because it made me better understand what my great grandfather and his family when through.
