When I was one, I had a seizure caused by outdated vaccination practices. I was at my great-grandmother’s house with my mom, grandma, and cousin, crawling on the floor and playing with toys and blocks, when my lips suddenly turned blue, and my eyes rolled back into my head. My mom, terrified, immediately called an ambulance, and by the time the paramedics arrived, I was beginning to regain consciousness. On the ride to the hospital, they gave me a small stuffed teddy bear to comfort me, and I named it Berry when I got a little older. Since that day, Berry has held a special place in my life—either resting on my bed or tucked safely into one of my corner nets. She has moved with me across the country several times and has been by my side for nearly my entire life. I plan to keep her with me into adulthood and, one day, pass her down to my own children so that, in some way, she will always remain a part of me.
