Basketball Championship Medal
My object is a basketball medal that my grandfather won when he in high school at St. Francis Prep in Brooklyn, New York. He was about 16 years old when he received this medal. The medal was made by Hock and Mandel, which was located on 95 Nassau Street in New York City. The medal was given to my grandfather in the year 1939. This object has a lot of history behind it because it was given to my grandfather after his team won the New York Catholic High School Basketball Championship. Back when it was made, this medal would cost around three dollars because it is not made out of any precious metals such as gold or silver. We believe that this medal is made out of copper or brass. Now, I think this medal would cost around thirty dollars to make. My grandfather was the first generation in his family to be born here in the United States. The medal means a lot to me because I know my grandfather had to practice hard to become such a good basketball player. This medal also means a lot to me because even though my family was still somewhat new to this country, my grandfather embraced the culture of the United States by playing basketball and baseball with other people and actually became good at those sports.
