My mother’s baby spoon has her name engraved on it, as well as a picture of a baby on the end of the handle. This small spoon was given to my grandmother by my great aunt, who was my mom’s godmother. My grandmother used it to feed my mom, my aunt, and my uncles when they were children. When my mom was pregnant, my grandmother gave her the spoon for her own children.

I have a collection of tiny silverware, which I began with my mom’s spoon. I’ve since added many thrifted utensils: forks, spoons, knives, and even a pair of mini tongs. There isn’t enough space in my parents’ cupboards for me to get every mug and dish I like, but the silverware doesn’t take up too much space. I like to imagine when I have my own house I’ll fill the cupboards with unique plates, cups, and bowls, alongside my beloved collection of silverware. Oftentimes unique dishes don’t stack very well, but if I’m living by myself, I won’t need as many things to fit in the cupboard.

I use this baby spoon and my other mini utensils to scoop sugar, stir tea, eat ice cream, and just for fun when eating. I’m thankful for the spoon that started my collection and facilitated positive anticipation for the future; it’s an important reminder that seemingly “insignificant” objects can be very important to someone else.
