This is an old antique Iron used for straightening clothes. This was made in the US around 1880. My Great Grandmother had bought this to Iron for straightening her clothes and she passed it down to my Grandmother and my Grandmother passed it down to my Mom. What you do is put hot coals in the bottom tray to warm it up and pour water in there and it would basically steam the clothes. It was one of the first inventions of the iron and made things easier for people back then since they had to dry clothes on ropes and they would be really wrinkly. Comparing this to Ironers used nowadays they haven’t really changed the design that much.
