Amber
Lithuania is a small country in Central Eastern Europe, and the national gem of Lithuania is Amber, or in Lithuanian gintaras. It is found washed up after a storm by the sea in Lithuania, and it is most commonly found near the baltic sea or regions such as Klaipėda. Amber is Lithuania’s gold, it represents Lithuania’s identity and heritage. The ancient Baltic tribes of Lithuania believed it warded off evil and illness, and that the amber represented health and prosperity. In around 2006, my mother immigrated to the United States from Lithuania, and in the United States she connected with a Lithuanian community, where we are able to learn about Lithuanian history, what it means to be Lithuanian, and to be able to celebrate our culture and traditions. My mother brought amber jewelry with her from Lithuania when she immigrated, and whenever we visit Lithuania we buy amber jewelry or pieces of amber. Amber connects to me because it reminds me of my culture and heritage, as being Lithuanian is an important part of my identity and who I am.
