Ableskiver Pan
My great-grandmother’s family came to the U.S. from Norway. They not only brought traditions, but also special kitchenware. One of these tools was an Æbleskiver pan. Æbleskiver are small, doughy, pancake-like balls that you can fill with sweet or savory foods, a Norwegian staple. To make them sweet, my family has used serviceberries, lingonberry sauce, or any other berry. There have also been savory editions, as we have used meat, cheese, and sometimes greens like spinach. You need a special pan to make Æbleskiver, and the one that my family has was given to us by my great-grandmother from Norway. My family loves to eat together, especially in tough times. Æbleskiver is a nice way for us to connect with each other and also connect with our heritage. When we visit my great-grandmother, we always bond over traditional Norwegian food like Æbleskiver. Whenever I wake up and smell Æbleskiver, it reminds me of where my family came from and makes me feel connected to my ancestors.
