A story of Mortar and Pestle
What seasoning do you like? Everyone knows the scent of spices, sweet pepper and dill. What is it about the ground seeds of fennel and coriander? These smells indicate a tasty meal and remind us of home, tradition, warmth of family holidays. Such associations I had at the time when I saw a mortar and pestle in the Tenement museum.
In Russian tales, Baba Yaga is portrayed as a mythical creature who files through the air in a mortar, using the pestle as a rudder.
In psychology means the symbol of the feminine and masculine.
Even today, some people say that a mortar and pestle is useful for cooking or to decorate the kitchen.
I believe that through such objects we pass on the traditions of the family and the food is more delicious. Sometimes during the summer holidays, l helped my aunt who lived in the village. We chopped coriander seeds, parsley and dill. The kitchen smelled of coriander seeds, parsley and dill. My aunt was working in a school library. She always had many stories, legends and jokes. After we laid out the seasonings ready for our 4 families. While working we sang folk songs or listened to the radio together.
Sometimes my sister and I repeat this tradition and it's great!
