Zriny family, circa 1906
This family portrait shows my maternal grandmother's mother, Christine Zriny, as a little girl around age 6. My great-grandmother was born in Chicago in 1900, but her parents immigrated in the 1890s. This photo is the only object my family has to remind us of our ancestors who came to the United States. With my great-grandmother are her parents, brothers, and an aunt. They came from what was then Hungary, but called themselves Bohemian and spoke Slovak. I don't know the name of the town they came from or what country it is in today. I don't know why they left their home. My great-great-grandfather worked in the Chicago stockyards when he arrived. I'm surprised they could afford to have a formal portrait taken.
