Your Story Our Story

Every year my family comes together for our family reunion. No matter how busy we may be in our everyday life, we make sure to show up. Since my great grandmother passed, we made it our job to make sure we come together to celebrate each other and not just for funerals. This
tradition has brought the family together and closer. My great grandmother was the foundation of our family. She was very big on being together as a family and always made certain that all family members were included, listened to, and loved. It didn't matter whether she was helping create an atmosphere for togetherness at Sunday dinner, by answering my calls just to see how I was doing, or by simply being there for me. She created a sense of belonging to something bigger than myself, a feeling that family came first. We never realized what an important role she played in keeping our family connected until after she passed. Holding this annual family reunion is a way for me to carry out her legacy and keep her spirit alive within my family.

Being surrounded by my family makes me feel very grateful and happy inside, especially the little girl in me. It reminds me of where I come from and helps me understand who I am today. It’s usually held at a clubhouse in Connecticut, where most of my family and I are from. From playing games, singing karaoke, having drinks, and laughing, I feel so connected when I’m together with my family. It’s sad to say a death in the family had to bring us closer. However, my family always reminds me that I am never doing life alone.
