My father talked about the struggles that he went through getting to the US. He was in debt, he was unable to speak the language and it was very hard for him to get a stable foothold when he got here. He described living in rooms with 8 people at a time because the rent was $100. He wasn't even originally a cook, he helped his uncle with his lumber business back in China. But he said it was the only way for him to make money in the states so he had to learn.
