My dad gave me a silver watch that he worked for and bought himself around my age. He was in high school at the time he wore it every day. Before he passed away, He gave it to me so I’d have something nice to wear every day, and so I could be like him. It was just a watch with not such a big story, but it means alot because it shows that even something small could have value and impact on my life. Having this watch is a big part of who I am because it shows how much my family values hard work and taking care of what you own. All of my family has some sort of item that they still have from a kid, from when they worked hard and bought themselves, but this one stood out the most to me. Seeing it every morning is a small reminder to stay responsible and manage my time well. It also connects to the idea of economic opportunity in U.S. history. For generations, millions of Americans have started out in basic, entry-level jobs to earn a living, build a foundation, and create a better life for their kids.
