Every Christmas my family eats pepper pot. It’s a Guyanese dish made of different kinds of meats, like oxtail, beef chunks, and cow heel. My dad is from Guyana and my mom is from America. Even though I was born here, my Guyanese roots are deep. When I was younger, we used to go every holiday I’ll get to see my brother and sister and their kids. My brother would take me and my little sister to a hotel that had an arcade in it. He would put a bunch of points on the game card and let us run around for about 2 hours. When I woke up, my grandmother would always be making plantains, eggs, and bake salt fish. Then sitting outside on the porch, kids and adults would walk by and say “Wallo! Good morning!” or “ Wallo! How you doing today?”. This is how I learned my grandmother real name. All the people passing by saying hi and greeting her with newspaper and stuff while she drinks her tea. I love when everyone pops up at my grandma house to tell us hey and see us after not seeing us in a very long time.
