This image shows the arepa, a traditional Venezuelan dish that can be eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is made from corn flour and can have any filling, depending on a person’s or family’s preferences. In my family, everyone has eaten arepas from a very young age. This dish is very important in my family history because all my ancestors have passed the tradition down through generations. Even though my entire family has moved to the United States, we still make arepas, and we will continue teaching future family members to eat and prepare them. Arepas inspire me because they remind me of my roots and my history as a Venezuelan, as well as the love I have for my family and the good memories we have while sharing this dish.
