Music is one of the most important arts to me, as it has the ability to communicate and touch in ways other art doesn’t. There are so many types of music out there; there is something for everyone. My chosen way of listening to music are records. Most people enjoy digital and streaming music, but I prefer having a physical copy of mine. I like vinyl because they tend to be aesthetically pleasing, and I enjoy the physical process needed to use them.
The device that is used to play records is a turntable. I found out about them through social media and decided that it was something I was interested in. My parents, knowing how much it meant to me, got me an entire stereo set up including a turntable and records when I was fourteen.
I was also fascinated by the fact that turntables are over 100 years old, and that within that time, they have not been altered all that much. This goes to show that modern technology does not necessarily take the place of old technology.
To care and maintain a turntable and records, you must be delicate, as they can be easily uncalibrated. I make sure to have the settings and arm of the turntable set accordingly, and when handling records, I wear special gloves. I also use a special spray and cloth to clean the records. I enjoy sitting down and enjoying the music after set up. Music is what gets me through life.
