My great grandfather Chief Maurice Dennis was from the Canadian tribe, the Abenaki. He made this totem pole. It is made from a log and carved and painted. It tells stories. It follows a tradition of the Abenaki tribe that they told stories through their woodwork. I learned about this totem pole from my dad who was Chief Dennis’ grandson. I’m not sure how old this totem pole is but it is located in a park in Old Forge New York called The Enchanted Forest. My great grandfather made it and it shows that I have a Native American side of my family. My great grandfather Maurice Dennis, whose Abenaki name was Mdawelasis (Little Loon), made this when he was in New York. Afterwards my great aunt Andre continued this tradition. The totem pole says that I am part Native American. The tribe was the Abenaki tribe from Canada.
