When my grandfather was 18, he was drafted into Vietnam. He was very scared that he would never make it back. My great grandfather, in order to calm him, gave him a silver dollar. He told him that no matter what, he could always remember him as long as he kept the silver dollar safe. He was pulled out of the war before it ended, and kept the silver dollar safe, just like my great grandfather told him to. He went on to be a very successful man with a happy family and 2 kids. When both my dad and aunt left for college, he gave them 3 silver dollars each to hold on to and give to their future kids. Now as I grow up I often look at the silver dollars, which we keep in a special box, and remember the stories of my family. One day when I'm older, I know that I will find great joy in telling these stories to my kids, as we pass down the stories of our families to one another.
