Tortilla

Relationship: Child of im/migrant

The tortilla has been a huge part of my life in terms of what I eat and my families migration story. Both my parents were born in Mexico and they made the decision to come to the US based on the fact that they wanted a better life. They took very little (next to nothing) and decided to make the journey. At that time they both had not met each other (they would meet later down the line). They did eventually make it here and obviously treasures didn't just magically rain down on them. They struggled a lot and still do, but something they always kept with them is their food traditions. They never abandoned the way they eat, one of the main things being a tortilla.
The tortilla can literally go with anything. Dip it in a soup and eat, stuff some meat in there and eat, put some eggs in there and eat. No matter what, you can incorporate the tortilla to make it better. Although it may seem like a tortilla is flavorless, you'd be surprised as to how much flavor it could add to your food. I've been eating tortilla's for as long as I could remember. It's extremely rare the day that i don't eat a tortilla. It's a huge part of my culture because of how many foods are enhanced by the tortilla. I expect the tortilla to stick with me for the rest of my life even after i move out.
