The Shawl
By Zaynah Salmon

The shawl travelled all around the world. It started in India and moved to New York then to Chicago. After that it moved to Madison Wisconsin then back to Chicago.  Finally it came back to New York were my mom has it right now.
My great grandmother had the shawl in India and wore it on her wedding day. It is a Indian tradition to wear it on your wedding day.The shawl is special to my family because even though my great grandmother is not alive anymore we still have the shawl because it makes my family think about her.
In school our homework was an artifact that was passed down in your family. I did not know what to do so I thought and asked my mom. She said “I have a shawl” I didn't even know what a shawl was! I talked to my mom about the shawl and I learned more about it. As a kid it feels weird to think about who is going to get the shawl in the future. I hope I will get the shawl to make me connected to my family.
