The Bible
Although I don't consider myself to be religious, the bible and religion plays a significant role in my family dynamics. From the way my grandmother and mother dressed to the type of clothing I was expected to wear was influenced by the bible and the church. The women were to dress modestly (typically skirts and no pants) while men were expected to also dress modestly (typically business attire and no baggy clothing). Furthermore, the commandments in the bible are like laws in my house that I'm expected to follow. They influence the way I conduct myself. I would consider my family as a modern family in the sense that both of my parents work full time jobs. However, my father is still seen as the head of the house who is responsible to provide and lead. This ideology aligns to the belief in the bible that men are suppose to be the leader and provider in a marriage. In the bible you often see gendered roles that a lot of families today mimic. As a child I was expected to go to bible school and I remember one class that taught us about etiquette. The teachers explained the role of a man and how they were responsible to pull out the women's chair, pay for the dinner, and in a sense be the protector. From a young age I was taught gendered roles that influenced my relations with women. They were gendered roles that I didn't necessarily agree with but saw on a daily basis in my home and in the church. Overall, the bible plays an important role in my family structure.
