My grandfather was 19 years old when he immigrated to Boston from Lithuania in 1898. Four years later he moved to Bangor Maine where he established himself as a designer and tailor of men's clothes. The story that has been passed through our family for decades is that in 1937 an infamous bank robbing gang - The Brady Gang - was hiding in Bangor from the FBI. When discovered there was a spectacular public gun battle that led to the demise of "Al" Brady. Before the shooting my grandfather had left his chair to get some material from across the room. One of the bullets went through the window of his shop and lodged in his chair (which is now part of the Smithsonian collection in DC ). By a stroke of luck my grandfather survived.
