My grandmother is from Russia. When she came to the United States in the early 1940s, she brought her grandma's recipes. My favorite recipe is her stuffed cabbage recipe. I remember making it with her when I was little in the Lower East Side, where she lived. The recipe is very authentic.

- ¾ cup uncooked white rice
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 2 onions, chopped, divided
- 1 pound ground beef
- ¾ pound ground pork
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- 3 carrots, grated
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons sour cream
- 1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs, or as needed (Optional)
