For me, strawberry bon bons mean more than just being candy to me. They are closely linked to my childhood and to the time I spent with my family, primarily at my elder auntie’s house. Every time I think about those small round wrapped sweets, I remember not just the sweetness itself, but also the feeling of comfort and reassurance. My auntie always had a dozen of them stashed in an empty Kemps ice cream container or an old fashioned cookie tin. When I was younger, every time I’d visit, I knew without having to ask that there would always be a bunch waiting for me. I can still remember how it was reaching my arm in the container, hearing the wrappers crumple as I grab a pocket full, always getting reminded by my aunt on how I’d get cavities in my mouth from eating too many of them. The candies were straightforward—hard, sweet, strawberry flavored, and a runny gel in the middle to top it off, which was easily the best part. Those candies nearly became a heritage, almost like a staple of my childhood. For me, it showed to me how caring, thoughtful, and loving my auntie was, and to this day, whenever I see these sweet candies at stores or other peoples houses, it immediately takes me back to those unforgettable afternoons. For me, they will always remain a symbol of my childhood, simple joys, and my aunties love.
