Soup

Relationship: Child of im/migrant

This story is not just about the image its about the meaning behind the image. My mother every January 1 makes this soup called joumou. this is mainly a pumpkin based soup but it has a bigger meaning. When Haiti was enslaved they used to prepare this soup for their masters. When they revolted and won they drank the soup and this is because they were forbidden to drink it. My mother in particular puts dumplings , beef, macaroni, and plantains. Many families have there way of making it but they are all for the same cause. In my house my mother prepares two days before. then she starts making the soup in the evening and lets it cook over night. She periodically checks its through the night. In the morning we wake up and she serves the soup to us. This pot is the pot that my family uses to make the soup every year. This holiday is very important to my family my aunts and cousins come over to my house and we all celebrate and have a good time. We celebrate this to show how Haiti revolted from France and won and became independent.
