Sheet pan pizza
My dad's side of the family is the only one with any sort of traceable history past one or two generations. He is originally from Queens, New York. Born to my grandmother, the daughter of a Californian and an Irish Catholic in Queens all their lives, and my grandfather, from a family of Jews who ran a department store several generations back in the Lower East Side, his fondest childhood memories are italian ice, pizza, and the train ride back to Queens. When he was 17, he moved to Arizona and met my mom in high school. While his family moved back east just a year or so later, he stayed. Three kids later, my dad has deep ties to Arizona. I chose to induct his foccacia-style pizza in a sheet pan, a staple of my childhood, because it represents the bit of food heritage he brought west. For me, this pie is my childhood in Arizona, and moving back to New York, it's as distant to me as the dollar slice he based it on is to him.
