Rosary

My mother, Teresa, immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 2005, accompanied by my older sister, who was 5 years old at the time. My father had already immigrated to NY from the DR decades prior, and was working as a truck driver. My mother left behind 2 houses, her parents, her younger brother, and her career as a chemistry professor, a career that was unfortunately meaningless when she arrived in the States. The Dominican Republic is a very catholic country, being the only country with a bible on its flag. When she immigrated, she took her father's rosary with her. She would use it to pray but also to connect her back to home in times when she missed it. This rosary now hangs on our front door, to not only protect us but to have a piece of her father at home with us, too.
