He was raised by a well-known and respected Jewish family in Tehran, Iran. He was obedient. He always did his school work on time, helped out around the house and took care of his younger siblings. However, he longed for a better education. He wanted a better life. His head was cut open 2 or 3 times by rocks thrown at him. He didn’t argue, just cooperated. He lived in a Muslim country and could not do anything about it. So, at the age of 18, he left Iran by plane, commuted by train throughout Europe and arrived by boat to America. He left Iran with two friends. He left his family. He brought one small suitcase with him that carried a picture of his ancestors. Ironically, the name of the boat that brought him to America was the reason he left the country he was born in, “Liberty”. He was amazed when he saw the Statue of Liberty, cars, elevators and escalators. He started a life here. He started NYU medical school but dropped out because he could not afford it. He worked extremely hard hoping to succeed. He succeeded by building an exporting business. He met my grandmother and raised four incredible children in a house in Queens. He tells me I need to get a profession- a secure job where I would be my own boss. Today, he is an 86-year old inspiration. His name is Rolen Sabet and I am honored to tell you that he is my Grandfather.
