Pysanka Easter Egg Decoration
Pysanka is a Ukranian tradition done at Easter. My great-great-grandmother was born in Czechoslovakia. One year, she went to America, with her husband. Once she got there, she gave birth to my great-grandmother and her older brother. One day, she decided to go back to Czechoslovakia with her daughter and son, without her husband. Years later my great-grandmother and her brother came back to the U.S. when they were only 16-17 years old. My family was from the Carpathian Mountain Range, and where they lived is now part of Ukraine. We have celebrated Easter and Christmas with the entire family for years, and continue the tradition. My family decorates Easter Eggs using Pysanka, which uses hot wax placed on an empty egg to make decorations. The egg is then dipped in dye, the wax melted off, and we add more wax to create another pattern. My family continues to use this tradition of decorating Easter eggs each year, with eating pierogi and kielbasa, and we celebrate our family history on Easter day.
