Around 1960 sixty six years ago, my great grandmother made a family cookbook as the generations went on, members of my family added their own recipes throughout the generations. One of our family’s favorites :Pats perfect Pumpkin Pie was created in 1960. It is just a list of ingredients and instructions ,but it means so much to my family and plays a key role in how we celebrate Thanksgiving every single year. This recipe came from my grandma named Pat, whose recipe got placed in our family cookbook.Pat’s perfect pumpkin pie is a pumpkin pie recipe my grandma got inspired on from the back of a pumpkin can and then modified it to her own creation. This recipe connects to my family and identity because for as long as I can remember every Thanksgiving my family makes this recipe and it is a staple tradition in our family. This can mean that being American means enjoying food and family time on holidays and having pride in America and its history. Also, the concept of Americans having traditional recipes that help families come together to enjoy. Growing up me and my older sister always pitched in to help my grandma make this pie so when I think of Thanksgiving I immediately think of this. This pumpkin pie recipe takes place starting in Hartsville, South Carolina where my grandma is from, and my dads side of the family grew up but then migrated with us to Winston Salem,North Carolina where my family still has the tradition of making this pie every Thanksgiving. The creation of this recipe was not just a yummy dish,it is the legacy of my grandma.
