Puerto Rican Bandera
In 1957, my grandparents moved from Puerto Rico to New York. Leaving behind all they knew, they came to the States seeking a better life for themselves and their children. They didn’t bring much with them, and if they did, I don’t have any remnants of their belongings. However, the aspect of my culture that I would like to discuss is the Puerto Rican flag, or la bandera de Puerto Rico en español. To me, the flag represents the struggle for independence and the fight for human rights and freedom. I also see the strength of my ancestors who have struggled beyond measure and still find a way to smile, have fun, and celebrate life in the face of oppression. There is also a version of the flag that appears in black and white, which the Puerto Rican people created to symbolize resistance against colonial rule. When I see this flag, I feel a great sense of pride in my beautiful island and culture. It reminds me of all my grandparents left behind in pursuit of a better life for my mother, myself, and the next generations to come.
