The "Pilon" (mortar and pestle) was a gift from her father when she left Puerto Rico for New York's Henry St. in the 40's. The aroma of "sofrito", the base for all good Puerto Rican cooking still clings to its hard wood. Today, at 95, my mother as strong as the wood of her father's gift that has been a part of thousands of family meals. This pilon is tied to her roots, our family traditions, a piece of Puerto Rico's culture.
