Pilon is a wooden tool used in the kitchen to mash ingredients together. You can use it to make a dish or to smash something like garlic. My favorite Puerto Rican dish mofongo is made with a  Pilon. Growing up I would go to my grandfather's house and he would always have a pilon on his kitchen counter and use it to make foods or crush garlic to season food. He made sure that my cousins and I knew how to use it. properly and that it was a part of our culture. When he went back to Puerto Rico this year he brought back pylons for all of his kids with their names on them because he knew it was important to him so he wanted it to be important to us.
