Pierogies
Pierogies are a delicious traditional Polish food, they are dumplings made from unleavened dough and can be filled with a variety of savory or sweet fillings. Some common examples are potato, cheese, sauerkraut, mushrooms, or fruit, typically served with sour cream, fried onions, or butter. They are soft or crispy, depending on how you cook them. Some smell mostly of potato, others cheese, some sweet, some savory. They are a very popular and loved comfort food in Eastern Europe, though they have still found their way to my and many others hearts in other places too. They are known for their versatile nature because they can be enjoyed as appetizers, mains, and even desserts, as well for their simple cooking process. I was first introduced to pierogies when at an art fair at the Minnehaha Falls last summer with my dad. My dad is Polish and had this food quite a lot growing up. At first I didn't want to try the pierogies when my dad offered but he persuaded me and I'm so glad he did. The pierogies were cooked to perfection, super soft with the perfect ratio of sweet to savory. As soon as I bit into my first pierogi I knew this was something I would love. We ended up getting at least one more plate of pierogies and enjoyed them together. Now, whenever I go to the same annual art fair at the Falls or the Christmas fair on the boardwalk, I always look for pierogies because I know they will always be something I enjoy, no matter the kind.
