pictures
These pictures are of my parents as children in israel, with a Jewish European born family member. My Father with his Mom who was a seamstress in Jerusalem. She has such a Jewish look to her, her hair and her face ..their clothes and that horse, trying to maintain "German" customs in the sunny dusty terrain of 30's Jerusalem.Jews thinking they are German, in the transition to being Israeli. My Mom is sitting with her Maternal Grandmother who she called "Mama" and for years I thought that was her actual name. Her Grandmother was born in Bukovina in a small Shtetl called Kosov, she married her first cousin and they came to Israel before the war.I never met her, and was never exposed to that part of my Mother's identity. This picture for me tells of a part of my identity which was censored in Israeli culture , looked down upon as primitive, diaspora-like and weak.
