A photo of me and my mom.

When I moved to the US, I was 7 years old. I only came with clothes, a bible and a few family photos. I had a small backpack with some toys and my mom had our clothes in a big suitcase. We moved into my stepdad's house located in Westchester County. It was way bigger than where we lived before and had a lot of space. I had my own room, bathroom, and playroom. The first thing I did in my new room was put the picture of me and my mom on the dressers.  It was very hard for me to settle here because I had a strong Jamaican accent and I spoke very fast. My neighbors were very sweet and always played with me. When I started school, I felt different and not everyone was nice. I was held back a year, I had to go to speech therapy everyday, and I was constantly being taken out of class to do random tests. My mom got a job at the gas station across the street and she also had a hard time fitting into the new environment. My stepdad helped us adapt to the new culture. I don’t have the toys or suitcase anymore but I do have the picture frame and the bible. My parents moved to a new house last year and they are currently renovating so I can’t add a picture of the bible.
